Our intervention on environment

Solid waste management

Creating green pockets within slums (plantation in common grounds, around homes and possibly kitchen gardens).

Interventions is towards making scientific knowledge of solid waste management, composting and plantation known to the urban poor community and enabling community to put this knowledge into action by creating local systems in context of slums. It is also important to inculcate this understanding in their day-to-day livelihood practices.

Slum areas where we work are highly polluted with minimal standard of health and sanitation facilities. They are mostly situated in vicinity of big factories adding to air, noise and water pollution. One of the clusters of areas where we work- Bombay Hotel (huge ghetto of minority community) is next to the biggest dumping ground of solid waste of city. The entire area of population is around 1.5 lakh. It is similar to hundreds of dumping grounds where waste is dumped in every open space between houses.
